Phosphorus metabolism in unsaturated fatty acid-deficient rats.

چکیده
The gross symptoms of essential fatty acid deficiency have been known for more than 20 years (l-3), but the origin of the increased metabolic rate, increased water consumption, and eventual growth failure which characterize the syndrome have not been traced to a particular area of intermediary metabolism. An involvement of oxidative processes with unsaturated fatty acid deficiency has been shown by Kunkel and Williams (4) who reported an increased cytochrome oxidase activity in livers from fat-deficient rats. An attempt has been made in the present study to investigate further the aspects of metabolism which are dependent upon the unsaturated fatty acids for their proper function. Measurements of radioactive phosphorus (P”“) uptake suggested that in a fat deficiency there was an altered phosphorus (P) metabolism associated with either glycolytic or respiratory mechanisms. Studies carried out in vitro showed that the deficiency results in a decreased esterification of high energy phosphate during the oxidation of some of the tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates. This decreased esterification has been localized at or about the level of electron transport concerned with diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN).

Inhibition of sheep vesicular gland oxygenase by unsaturated fatty acids from skin of essential fatty acid deficient rats.
Unsaturated fatty acids present in the lipids of essential fatty acid (EFA)deficient rats were found to inhibit the oxygenase activity of sheep vesicular gland in an instantaneous, reversible manner. However, competitive inhibition by high levels of these acids cannot account fully for the reported loss of prostaglandin synthetic capacity of these EFA-deficient animals. A similar competitive in...
متن کاملEffects of a Nutritional Deficiency of Unsaturated Fats on the Distribution of Fatty Acids in Rat Liver Mitochondrial Phospholipids.
The fatty acid composition of liver mitochondrial phospholipids from rats rendered deficient in essential unsaturated fatty acids has been determined, and compared with that of rats fed a diet containing corn oil. In addition to marked reductions in the amounts of linoleic and arachidonic acids esterified a t the &position of ethanolamine-, inositol-, and choline glycerophosphatides, the defici...

Hepatic cholesterol, triglyceride, and phospholipid concentrations, plasma cholesterol levels, cholesterol biosynthesis, and fatty acid patterns in plasma lipids and liver lipid fractions, have been studied in intact, gonadectomized, and hormone-treated gonadectomized male and female rats fed a fat-free diet, a control diet containing fat, and a diet containing cholesterol, to determine relatio...
متن کاملPathological hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction are linked to aberrant endogenous unsaturated fatty acid metabolism
Pathological cardiac hypertrophy leads to derangements in lipid metabolism that may contribute to the development of cardiac dysfunction. Since previous studies, using high saturated fat diets, have yielded inconclusive results, we investigated whether provision of a high-unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) diet was sufficient to restore impaired lipid metabolism and normalize diastolic dysfunction i...
متن کاملPure linoleate deficiency in the rat: influence on growth, accumulation of n-6 polyunsaturates, and [1-14C]linoleate oxidation.
Essential fatty acid deficiency has been widely studied but the extent to which its effects are attributable specifically to deficiency of linoleate as opposed to deficiency of all unsaturated fatty acids is unknown. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of pure linoleate deficiency on growth as well as changes in the metabolism and oxidation of n-6 polyunsaturates. The diets contained 20 en...
